***PRINT OUT THIS PAGE AND BRING IT WITH YOU TO THE FIELD TRIP…THIS PAGE CONTAINS IMPORTANT LOGISTICAL DETAILS, INCLUDING DRIVING DIRECTIONS...

Trip Summary:  We'll meet at Mesa College by the flag pole near A-100 (click here for campus map).  After examining a local stratigraphic section exposed just south of campus, we'll caravan east as a group to Sunrise Highway, stopping along the way at various points of geologic interest.  Once on Sunrise Highway, we'll make a few more stops, ending up in the town of Julian, for a tour of the Eagle/High Peak mines.

Mine Website: http://www.homeofourfathers.com/lisbeth/journal2jan2006.htm

Field supplies to bring with you: clipboard, pencil/pen, closed-toed shoes (no sandles), $10 admission fee.

Directions back to San Diego from the mine:

  • Exit the main gate, and proceed west, down the hill, toward Julian.
  • At the bottom of the hill, turn left onto Hwy 78 (the main drag in Julian), then make a quick right onto Hwy 79.  Follow Hwy 79 for approx. 25 miles, back to I-8 (follow the signs), then take I-8 west back to San Diego.
